Enhance your life through fashion.

Science has found that the right and left hemispheres of our brains are responsible for different functions. We use the left side of our brain for analysis and calculations, logic, speech and language comprehension, and recognition of words, letters, and numbers. The right side of our brain is responsible for creativity, intuition, imagination, emotion and feeling, creation, context/perception, art, and the recognition of faces, places and objects.
While we all use both sides of our brain for various activities, much of our everyday life requires the conscious application of our left brain function. The knowledge and skills we learn and develop in our left brain are crucial for our success as self-sufficient humans and members of society. Much of our school’s curriculum are dedicated to this development. Because our left brain development is crucial for our survival, it is not surprising the value that we put on actively enhancing these processes.
But what about the conscious effort to develop the processes and skills in our right brain?
Yes we all feel emotions and use our imagination, creativity, etc., but do we actively seek to develop these skills? Do we also work to understand and evolve the aspects of our right brain function, or do they get overlooked because they are not (traditionally) crucial for our success at human life? Developing the functions in our right brain is a lot less straight forward than those of our left. Additionally, if a person does view themselves as creative or artistic, it may be difficult to have the confidence or motivation to try to develop these skills.
Fashion and expressing ourselves/our personal style through clothing is a way that every single person can develop their skills and processes of the right brain. Whether you consider yourself an artistic person or not, you still have to get dressed everyday in order to get out into the world and complete your daily activities. Each day is an opportunity to create a new look, to explore what you like, what you don’t like, and what you may have never thought of before. Clothing gives us a chance to enhance our appreciation for what we find beautiful, appealing, and down right cool. Through exploring our personal style which sometimes requires breaking out of comfort zones we develop our creativity and our relationship with ourselves, our emotions, and enhance our self confidence.

With the tasks and obligations of daily life, our human existence may feel mundane at times. We are given one life to live, and it is up to us to have appreciation and find the beauty in our inner and outer worlds. Developing personal style and pushing our own boundaries with what we wear is not a requirement of life, but if practiced, it may lead to a sense of fulfillment you never knew existed.
Hi Justice,
ReplyDeleteI thought your post was quite interesting. I liked how you used science and psychology to also discuss fashion because that plays a huge role in it as well. I also think showing those pictures of different styles made it easier for me to fully understand it. If I would have to pick, I would say I fall in the categories of in the natural category leaning more toward natural/creative!
Hi Justice!
ReplyDeleteSince fashion is one of my main loves, I truly loved reading your piece. Since everyone interacts with clothing on a daily basis, fashion and personal style present a special path for this development, as people begin to find pieces that they like that represents their identity. Everybody has a distinctive style because it expresses their individuality. Our creativity can be enhanced, our relationship with ourselves and our emotions can be strengthened, and our self-confidence can be increased by experimenting with new appearances, developing our unique style, and venturing beyond of our comfort zones.
Hi Justice! I loved reading this post and I think it was such a cool idea to incorporate science and psychology into this blog. I think you make such a good point about how we are so focused on developing our left brain skills but forget that the right brain is also a big part of our lives. Obviously our necessary everyday functioning is priority, but I think being creative and expressive helps remind us that there's more to life than going through the motions.
