Exploring individuality through clothing
To some individuals, putting energy into what one wears beyond the functionality of clothing may seem like unnecessary extra work. Especially if you are on a time crunch getting ready or there is anxiety about how you will be perceived by others, expressing oneself through fashion may seem like more trouble than its worth.
I have heard various people in my life say something along the lines of, "I like [the clothing in question, in a store or on someone else, usually famous or a model] but I could not wear it" I challenge this notion with, why not? Who says we cannot push ourselves outside of our comfort zone and dress differently than what we usually do? Who says we have to stick to one particular style for the rest of our lives? That there are clothes that we like and admire that are simply not for us? I'll tell you who: ourselves.
How far we choose to explore fashion and personal style that is outside of our comfort zones is entirely up to us. I challenge everyone reading this to view the fashion they are exposed to with open minds. Inspiration comes in many different forms. In my experience, finding looks or pieces I like is where I start. I can be inspired by an outfit that I think is sensational, or I see a article of clothing and my mind instantly starts thinking about ways to style the piece. I do not believe one has to dress in an "out-there/ different" way to cool or fashionable, but I do believe the more comfortable we feel exploring our personal style, the more we gain from fashion.

ReplyDeleteHi Justice! I really connected to this blog post as sometimes dressing myself gives me anxiety. I think a lot of that anxiety comes from an unnecessary feeling of being overwhelmed because I do not know where to start, whether it is dressing for the occasion or even something as simple as the weather. I tend to take inspiration from paparazzi photos of celebrities caught off-duty or off-guard. I will say that sometimes I will see something on a celebrity and not even think about trying to attempt a look, and it’s usually because they have so much confidence in what they’re wearing. However, I appreciate your argument that we shouldn’t constrict ourselves in the way we dress because if we are truly free, then our clothing should represent that somehow. Thank you for such a passionate post!
ReplyDeleteHi Justice! I loved reading this post as I love fashion and I usually pick out items that my friends question, but I don't care because as long as I like it, that is what matters. I feel the same way about hearing people say they like an outfit or a piece of clothing but that they couldn't wear it or couldn't pull it off, but they are the only one standing in their way! I totally agree with you that the more we try things, the more comfortable we get with our personal style.

ReplyDeleteHello Justice.
ReplyDeleteI really like your point of view on fashion. It really made me think about the times I have said "I could not wear it." I like how you ask questions to the audience, and questions that really demand answers from the audience. As a reader, it made me change the way I see fashion in a sort of way. The way you end that paragraph was really effective because it closed your main point, and it was genius. Reading this made me want to go out and try on new things other than my own typical t-shirt, blue jeans, and converse combo.
Cheers, Oscar.
I really enjoyed reading your post! I like the part where you talked about how people don't feel comfortable wearing clothes that models wear but they would want to. I do this all the time. I don’t wear certain clothes because it doesn’t look the same on me as it does on a 100 pound model. This is a very important topic to talk about and I like how you chose to talk about this. Everyone should be confident in what they wear. Everyone is beautiful whatever they want to wear. I really look forward to reading more of your posts!
ReplyDeleteHi Justice!
ReplyDeleteFashion is one of my biggest passions. No matter where I'm going or what I'm doing, I always ensure that my outfit isn't too ordinary or overdone. To me, fashion allows me to express my creativity in ways that words can't. I love that your blog post encourages people to dress up more, and that it isn't "unnecessary extra work." Everyone has their own taste in clothing, and it's a representation of their individuality, like you mentioned!
