The relationship between our feelings and the clothes we wear

I have always found it interesting to examine the relationship between what we wear and how we are feeling.  While I may put my ensembles together in a similar manner, the vibe I choose to go for that day is going to depend a lot on how I am feeling and where I am going.  On days where I have higher energy levels and I am feeling creative, I like to pick out something from my closet that I usually don’t wear (often times because it is more difficult to style due to pattern, color, material, or shape of the garment) and style that into an outfit I would want to wear out.  Some days this goes smoother than others, but often times I will loose steam half way through picking an outfit and get discouraged.  This is when I have to remind myself that although I care about what I am doing, it is really not that deep and to not stress myself out (which is key for me because I WILL STRESS). Another key for me during this process knowing the difference between thinking an outfit works and really liking what I put together.  It doesn’t need to be the most special, ground breaking ensemble every time, but I want to love or at the least, really like what I have on.  I have found there is a certain power that comes with loving what you’re wearing.

I usually pick out my outfit for work the night before.  If I do not plan an outfit there will be 100% chance I will be wearing leggings and a hoodie because I do not have the time or brain function for that at 6:30am.  What I have noticed is that from the time it takes me to put on my chosen outfit and walk out the door, there is an energy shift in me that I am not even conscious of until after the fact.  The power my clothing gives me is more noticeable to me in the mornings, where I essentially did nothing except put on the outfit (the work was done the night before and I get to roll out of bed and reap the benefits) and boom, I am a new woman.  Do you feel like your clothes give you power, or elevate your self-confidence?  Are there some days you like to be more expressive with your style choices than others?

  1. Hey Justice! I think that this is such a cool post. You are so right when you say that an outfit can make or break your day. It makes it a whole lot better when you like what you are wearing and how you look in it. I chuckled at the end when you said that if you do not pick out your outfit the night before, you'll end up in leggings the next day because I do the exact same thing. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a solid pair of leggings (they are so comfortable), but sometimes its nice to be a little more dressed up. Great job!

  2. Hi Justice! I enjoyed reading this post as well as other posts of yours in other weeks! I think you always make really good points about how clothes can shift our mood, and even give us a whole new level of confidence just because we like what we're wearing. I love the process of creating an outfit, especially when its for something fun and I have the time to be extra creative and try new things. Sometimes I tear apart my entire closet though which is not ideal.
