Why should we care about our everyday style?
Clothing is more than what we put on our bodies everyday to go about our lives. The functional perspective of clothing is that we choose what we wear based on what we plan to be doing or the weather forecast. Another huge element people take into account while getting dressed is, "how will this outfit look to others." Taking into account how others will perceive our look is something that is inevitable, but in my opinion, this should be minimized. The more we dress for ourselves the bigger risks we will take.
Each time we get dressed to leave the house is a new opportunity for self expression. It is a way to get our creativity flowing, and to explore what we find interesting, beautiful, or attractive. If on a given day we are feeling a particular emotion, we may dress ourselves based on this feeling. The clothes we wear have an impact on how we feel and the more we explore this correlation, the more we learn about fashion, style, ourselves, and others.
Ever since I was a little girl, I appreciated the beauty in clothing. By 5 years old I loved the delicate fabric of my dresses, and how it felt to be all dressed up in clothing that I found beautiful. I also loved the feeling of freedom running around in my biker shorts and Timberland boots. As I got older I began appreciating styles outside of feminine and masculine, such as the dark feminine, flowy-earthy style, classy (business and academia), retro, casual chic, and so many more. One of the main things that I love about fashion is the freedom. There are no rules and that you do not have to maintain the same style everyday. Some days I am "overdressed" (I do not believe there is a such thing as overdressed) and others I leave the house in sweats and a hoodie. Some days I am ultra feminine, with pink or lace and the next day I am wearing mostly male clothing or have a dark aesthetic.
Hi Justice! First off, I really love that you chose to write about fashion. Clothing and style is something that I love very much and I love listening to how others love it too. The biggest thing that stood out to me in your blog was the emphasis that you expressed about self expression and dressing for ourselves and not others. I love this because I feel that is something I like to do and will always preach. Having a unique style that suits your likes and identity is not something a lot of people can say they have, so why not embrace it!
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree with everything stated, especially the fact that when we dress for ourselves instead of others we take bigger risks because we're not trying to impress anyone. I personally think people usually look better due to confidence when you can tell they're wearing what they like, even if it's not something I would wear personally. I think fashion has become so subjective that if you like it, you should wear it.
ReplyDeleteHey Justice!
ReplyDeleteTo start I would like to say that I absolutely love the fact that you chose fashion to be your topic for your blog. I almost chose to focus on this topic as well because I think that fashion is such an expressive tool for every individual and it is something that I love to dive deeper into and explore. I agree with your point that each person should dress for themselves and what makes them happy because at the end of the day if you feel confident and good then that is all that matters. I am very excited to see how you explore more into the world of fashion!
Hi Justice!
ReplyDeleteI wrote about fashion as well! I feel like it is a topic that a lot of people like to read about! Fashion is a great way for people to be able to express themselves and show who they are. I like the part where you mentioned that clothes are a way to express how we feel and I agree! When I am feeling lazy one day I will just wear comfy clothes. If I am feeling motivated and have a lot to do I will throw on a cute workout set. I definitely think we can express our emotion through clothes.
Hey Justice! I really enjoyed your stance on how we should perceive fashion. I think too many times we see people second guessing clothes items or we are victims of it ourselves. There's that “something” in our head telling us that's not you or this might not look good on me but your words about encouraging the freedom of self expression is authentic. I assume now more than ever, more and more people are finding that same desire to match our expression of our emotions to match our aesthetic more than just choosing clothes from an outsider's perspective. Great read, can't wait for what's next.

ReplyDeleteHi Justice! I really enjoyed reading your article and resonated with your perspective on clothing as a form of self-expression. The way you highlight the multifaceted nature of fashion, going beyond its functional aspect, was really well done. It's true that clothing choices can be influenced not only by practical considerations but also by how we want to be perceived by others. Your emphasis on dressing for oneself and minimizing the importance of others' opinions is a valuable point. I really enjoyed reading your anecdotes about your own journey with fashion.
